In December 2016, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced that they were making changes to the application intake management system for the Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship Program.
Previously, the Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship Program operated on a first-come, first-served system. The program was changed to a lottery-style system. Applicants interested in sponsoring their parents in 2017 had 30 days, from January 3 to February 2, 2017, to submit an online Interest to Sponsor form. 95,000 people completed the form.
In April, IRCC randomly selected 10,000 applicants who submitted forms, and invited them to apply within 90 days to sponsor their parent.
The 90-day deadline for the April draw will end on July 24, 2017. According to an IRCC representative, as of June 8, 2017, only 700 applications had been submitted.
Of those, 15 percent, or 105 applications, were incomplete. IRCC later announced that they will start rounds of invitation starting September 2017. Those who submitted an online Interest to Sponsor earlier this year will have second chance to invited.
